A Mother’s Ex-Boyfriend Charged in Shooting That Resulted in The Killing of 15-Year-Old Girl, Wounded 5-Year-Old Boy in Birmingham

The Birmingham Police Department said 27-year-old Otis Lee Montgomery III was charged with capital murder, attempted murder, and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling.

Reports say Montgomery fired into the mother’s apartment from outside shortly after noon on Wednesday, killing Cornelia Rose Lathan and striking her brother in the leg. The boy was taken to Children’s of Alabama for treatment.

Montgomery was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 3:04 p.m. Friday and is being held without bond. The warrants against him were obtained Friday morning.
